While many children in the catchment do attend Jackson, some students come to Jackson from other neighborhoods through voluntary transfer. Currently, there are 10 students on Jackson's waiting list.
Why does this information matter?
Andrew Jackson is home to an incredibly diverse student body. There are significant populations of students who identify as Latino, Asian, African American, and White. A high percentage of students--78%--are English Language Learners. In 2012-2013, there were 24 national heritages represented, 12 different languages spoken, and 112 immigrant families. Today, the school reports 17 different languages spoken. Roughly 10% of students are designated as Special Education Learners. Additionally, it is important to note that roughly 80% of students at Andrew Jackson come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Andrew Jackson is a community school that, in spite of financial challenges, brings together a growing multilingual, multiethnic community and continues to make educational progress. Not only that, the school celebrates its diversity through cultural events and programs, and has become a safe space for students and an important community feature.
