The typical class size at SLA is approximately 33 students. Every class also has a Student Assistant Teacher (SAT). SAT is a position that is available for seniors who have been successful in that course previously, and have been recommended by the teacher. When talking to students, we found that students enjoyed the presence of SATs and felt more comfortable asking SATs questions than their teachers, because the SAT was a peer. Students also talked about how they could tell teachers enjoyed having the SATs in their class because of large class sizes. SATs are able to take over smaller tasks such as checking the homework so that teachers can focus on the rest of the class. Parents sometimes brought up the concern that SATs have too much control in the classroom. For instance, a parent discussed how when she received a report card from the school, there were comments on it from the SAT, and the SAT was responsible for grading the homework. She thought this was inappropriate because SATs are peers of the students, and although the position calls objectivity in grading, there is no way to ensure this.
