Amy* is a sophomore at SLA@Beeber. She lives in North Philly and has one sibling. Her commute is 1 ½ hours each way. She leaves the house at 6:20am and arrives at school around 7:45am.
Amy, what attracted you SLA?
SLA was the best school I could get into. I was looking for a good school that would help me prepare for college. I would like to go to
Georgetown and study a mental science, perhaps Psychology.
Can you tell me what you really liked about SLA?
I liked being a trail blazer. There are no upperclassmen to be in competition with. And I really like that the teachers are good listeners and they really value what I have to say. My voice really matters. I also liked that I was able to start a Mock Debate affinity club after school. We were able to successfully compete against other Debate clubs in the Philadelphia area consisting of 10th and 11th graders. That was really cool.
Can you tell me what was challenging at SLA?
The school building is a little old. And there are no students to be role models, but you. The cafeteria food could be better and a little healthier.
Can you tell me what you did this summer?
I participated in a summer enrichment program at Villanova. It was a course in Psychology and Fashion. I was the only minority there and the only student from a project based learning community. I was surprised at how well I did in the course work compared to the other students who attended. I had no trouble handling the coursework and participating in team activities. I was also used to critical thinking and offering solutions outside the traditional box.
