Arts + Academics = Excellence
At Edwin M. Stanton School, there is a clear focus on the arts and it's positive contribution to a child's education. Students are encouraged to be creative and explore different aspects of the arts in order to find their talents, passions, and potential. Stanton has several professional music teachers on staff that teach a variety of music. Students have the opportunity to perform in instrumental groups, drumming groups, dance, and this upcoming year students will be encouraged to explore singing. E.M. Stanton School is located at: 1700 Christian Street Philadelphia, PA 19146 |
In March 2012, the Philadelphia School Reform Commission introduced a 2013 budget that suggested the closure of nine public schools, including E.M. Stanton. The argument for closing Stanton was that, despite the high-performance of the students, the building was very old and costly to fix.
Parents, teachers, students, and community members rallied together to save the school, which included music performances at the SRC meetings. The overwhelming support for the school helped the SRC come to the decision to keep the school open. State Senator Anthony Hardy Williams stated "Stanton is not just a school. It's an example of what can happen in public education in Philadelphia." |
