Overall, teachers describe Palumbo students as bright and full of potential. Because many of them come from lower-performing schools, many entering freshmen are lacking in some academic skills, says Penn Mentor Becky Wolnek. However, they are eager to learn and highly motivated. We spoke with several teachers who agreed and shared similarly positive sentiments about the student body. Data shows that Palumbo students score significantly higher than the Philadelphia average:
Palumbo prides itself on being a wonderful community where students can feel at home and where they enjoy attending. Dr. Bailey, the English department chair, says that the school serves breakfast in the morning and most students get there early to eat with their friends. Mrs. Donnelly, another English teacher, says the kids often get there before she does!
This year, for the second year in a row, Palumbo has offered a summer trip for students to visit Europe. This summer they visited Milan, Venice, Florence, Assisi, and Rome. Mrs. Donnelly was one of the teachers who accompanied them and said everyone had a wonderful time.
Palumbo has won many awards such as:
-19th best school in Pennsylvania by US News
-Winner of the Philadelphia Scholastic League Championship
-Jefferson Award for Public Service
-1st place in East Coast Get School Attendance Challenge
-UPenn National Moot Court Finalist

Perhaps most significantly, Palumbo won a national competition last year, the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. They were one of five schools to win out of over 2,300 entries. Their entry was an innovative technology invention which calculates the safest walking route to get between two locations based on crime data, something they thought could help students trying to commute to school from high-crime areas. The prize includes $140,000 in technology for Palumbo from Samsung! It was an amazing achievement on the part of the students who participated that will surely benefit the school.
