Because many of the basic aspects of the school experience--like student performance and school organization--are covered in the "Society in School" section, we wanted to focus on some common themes of our interviews. Keeping an asset framework in mind, here are some of the positive features of Jackson that were mentioned in multiple interviews.
|
Quality staffAll of our interviewees touched on the quality of Principal Kaplan and the teachers. We sensed a genuine appreciation for the teachers and staff of Andrew Jackson. Mrs. Johnson called the staff a "small family." Jackson's teachers have slightly higher average attendance than the district.
The physical spaceThrough fundraising efforts and community partnerships, Jackson has been able to install a playground and rooftop garden. Alterra Property Group helped to fund and construct the playground, while UPenn and Whole Foods have assisted with the garden. Jackson also has a new science lab and library.

ExtracurricularsThe parents and students we interviewed mentioned a variety of different extracurricular activities and school programs. From after-school language clubs, to a successful music program, to a United Nations Association, Jackson offers students several opportunities for enrichment.
SAFETY AND SECURITYStudents and parents expressed confidence in Principal Kaplan's ability to keep the students safe. Students reported they rarely had problems, while parents commented on Ms. Kaplan's firm approach--"The doors are locked at 8:40 on the dot," said Vina.

The experience: Overview
In our interviews with parents and students, 99% of what we heard about Andrew Jackson was positive or hopeful. Generally, complaints were minor--lack of air conditioning--or were understood to be inevitable results of the strapped budget. One parent and one student hinted that there were some students who could be difficult. There also seemed to be differing experiences with class size, with some people reporting average class sizes, while others spoke of classes with 30+ kids. Our parents and student interviewees spent much more time focusing on the good aspects of Jackson.
Similarly, Mrs. Johnson identified some areas for improvement, but said she really enjoys working at Jackson. Overall, we would say that Andrew Jackson is not without challenges and flaws, but successfully provides a positive school experience for students. The principal, teachers, staff, and parents are clearly united in supporting student success.
